MicroFocus Focus Knobs

NOTE:  At JMI we always strive to keep up with the ever-changing focuser market.  New focuser styles are constantly being developed and it's a challenge to make MOTOFOCUS units for all of them.

There are often times when a particular style of focuser is used on a variety of different telescopes.  If you don't see your particular scope mentioned in the description, it doesn't necessarily mean we don't have a MOTOFOCUS for you.

Sometimes two different focusers that were originally found on two different scopes (which is the way we identified them) are later found on the opposite scopes (swapped, if you will).  Therefore, the part number and main description may or may not match your equipment.

We try to provide pictures of the MOTOFOCUS mounted on the focuser for which it was designed along with a list of some of the telescopes we have seen it on.  When in doubt, look at all of our pictures to see if your focuser matches any of them.

To make sure that you order the correct product, please check the Focuser Style and Drive Block Hole Pattern (shown below).  The part number may indicate a scope that you do not have.  That is OK as long as you have the correct configuration.
Configuration 1 part number is MFESAR127*
Configuration 2 part number is MFESED127*
Configuration 3 and 4 part number is MFESC3

Note:  Special care must be taken to make sure you choose the right part number.
See the Maroon-colored NOTE at the top of this page.

NOTE

* The part numbers for  configuration 1 and 2 were based on the scope information we had at the time and may or may not match the scope you have.  The important thing is that you pick the right configuration based on the focuser type and drive block hole patter of your focuser.

MOTOFOCUS for Meade Cassegrain Telescopes

Meade Cassegrain Telescopes (except ETX and 16")

Some Meade SCTs are not consistent in the focusing mechanism design, so we now identify the appropriate MOTOFOCUS for your equipment by the style of the focus knob (see chart below).

NOTE

To verify which MOTOFOCUS version you need, please check the Focusing Knob style against the following chart:

Identifying the Correct MOTOFOCUS for Meade Cassegrain Scopes  (Chart 3)
Part No. Knob Style* Identifying Characteristics* JMI Hand Unit
MFMH Hexagonal Six-sided Knob with Three Flat Sides Yes
MFMR Round Cylindrical Yes
MFMRN Round Cylindrical No
* See the picture at left to identify the Round Focusing Knob (left) vs. somewhat Hexagonal Focusing Knob (right).  The hexagonal knob has three flat "sides."  The other "sides" are curved.
14" SCT Exception:  It appears that ALL Meade 14" SCTs have a ROUND knob with a LARGER diameter than the smaller SCTs and require the MFMH part number.  To verify this information with your 14" SCT, measure the knob diameter (see picture).  It should be 0.975".  If the diameter is 0.865" then order part number MFHR.

NOTE

The MFMRN (No JMI Hand Unit) MOTOFOCUS is equipped with a built-in variable-speed adjustment.  It plugs into the telescope base allowing control from the Meade hand unit, with the following restrictions:  Our hand units include an electronic brake which stops the motor as soon as you quit pressing the keys.  Meade systems do not include this brake.  Older LX200 telescopes do not have enough power on the low setting to run a MOTOFOCUS unit.  The high setting works fine and you can vary the speed using the variable-speed feature of the MOTOFOCUS unit itself.

Meade ETX-90 (non-EC version), ETX-90EC, ETX-90PE, ETX-105EC, ETX-105PE, ETX-125EC, ETX-125PE

MOTOFOCUS is especially important for the ETX when viewing near Zenith (in Alt-Az mode) because it is very hard to reach the focus knob at this position.  We use miniature motors (motor and gear box size is 1" x 0.5" x 0.375"!) for a very small package.

NOTE:  Meade modified their ETX scopes near the beginning of 2014.  The newer versions will not work with our current MOTOFOCUS unit.  You can identify the new ETX version by the emblem on the side of the fork (see picture).
The hand unit cord is plugged into the side of the miniature motor assembly.
The MOTOFOCUS hardware does not interfere with vertical operation at Zenith

This picture shows the parts of a Push-on style MOTOFOCUS system.  Parts vary some in size and shape but the basic shape and function remain the same as shown in this diagram.

There are two basic types of MOTOFOCUS.  On the left is a Meade Rack-and-Pinion focuser with MOTOFOCUS attached.  On the right is a Push-On type MOTOFOCUS for a Meade LX style scope.

What is MOTOFOCUS?

MOTOFOCUS is a battery operated hand control with an electric focus motor that attaches to the shaft of a focuser knob (or the knob itself) for precise, vibration-free focusing without the need to touch the telescope.  It is great for visual and photographic use and features variable speed for coarse and fine adjustments.  Precise positioning is accomplished through electronic braking.  Mounting is easy and requires no drilling or tapping.  Add the Personal Computer Focus Control (PCFC) or Digital Focus Counter (DFC), for improved focusing accuracy and repeatability.

Customer Comments

"Thanks very much for all your help and support.  You've gone over the top to accommodate my case.  And because of that, I would never hesitate to purchase any product from JMI because now I know that the support service is great.  Thanks again."  (J. T.  06/16/2016)

"MOTOFOCUS is an incredible product for the price.  It installed beautifully [and] works smoothly and quietly.  This will provide a quantum leap in accurate astrophoto focusing for me."  (R. P.  04/2014)

"I appreciate all the help I was given by the employees at JMI, especially...patience with my lack of expertise and knowledge.  This type of professionalism will make me a return customer."  (T. A. L.)

"I handed the MOTOFOCUS to my husband as soon as I arrived home...and we were both fascinated.  Excellent product, easy installation and now our telescope has been enormously upgraded."  (M. M. D.)

"I purchased two JMI MOTOFOCUSers and found both to be very high in quality and workmanship, also fairly priced....  I would recommend JMI products and service to everyone.  This company has its act together."  (J. S.)

"Attaching your MOTOFOCUS for my Williams Optics Microfocuser was simpler than I ever expected, and it worked like a charm, to boot!  Great engineering = great products !!!"  (G. B.)

"I recently purchased from you a motorized focuser for my ETX-105.  It has transformed my viewing.  It is almost like having a new and better telescope.  Congratulations and thanks!"  (N. M.)

"An excellent all round service with great delivery.  Many thanks for a great product."  (M. B.)

"...  As for the product, it has made my viewing 110% easier.  The MOTOFOCUS is very easy to install on the telescope.  It took me less than two minutes.  I would recommend this item to anyone who owns a Celestron 5, 6 or 8 SE.  It will make their viewing experience much easier and more enjoyable."  (T. S.)

"Most of the time, customers write to complain, but we should write also when satisfied!  I have received my conversion kit and I transferred flawlessly my C8 MOTOFOCUS to my NexStar 11 GPS.  I am very pleased to see a company that allows its customers to update its product rather than to force them to buy a brand new one by creating artificial incompatibilities.  Too many times such questionable marketing practices are used.  This is not the case with JMI.  One should note that my C8 MOTOFOCUS was more than 10 years old and still eligible for an upgrade.  Try to get this in the computer world...  So thank you and let me add that the JMI MOTOFOCUS is simply a mandatory accessory on a telescope.  And you can quote me if you will."  (Olivier Sanguy, Editor in Chief of ESPACE Magazine)

"Needed a replacement or repair on an old MOTODEC and MOTOFOCUS for an old C8.  Spoke with the technician who then sent me the parts I needed and instructions on how to do my own repairs.  Saved me a lot of money.  Much appreciated and everything worked great!  That was very good service."  (P. J. H.)

"I am wondering when you guys are gonna release that cloud filter that allows me to see through the clouds?  j/k ;)  You guys are like super heroes in the telescope world!"  (C. F.)

"MOTOFOCUS for my NexStar 8i worked like a charm.  Nice bit of engineering and packaging.  (T. U.)

"Just a brief note to tell you how happy I am with the recent purchase of the JMI MOTOFOCUS unit for my Celestron 9.25".  I have it on a Vixen Sphinx Mount which is pushing the upper limit of this mount, so an effective auto-focus unit is a must as it does take some time to dampen any vibrations.  Your unit worked perfectly out of the box and has made it a pleasure to get [it] accurately focused (and I'm usually far too busy to send an email like this unless the product really did exceed all my expectations).  (C. E. S. D.)

"Your MOTOFOCUS (MFCREF) with my Vixen Refractor ED102SS [is] Great!"  (J. C.)

"I received the MOTOFOCUS in the mail yesterday and must say it is fine craftsmanship. ...thanks for making such a quality item."  (D. B.)

"...I've been using one of your focus motors on my CG-11 for years.  I recently converted it to use on my LX200 with one of your conversion kits.  Everything has ALWAYS worked perfectly.  My hat is off to you and your fine company."  (D. A. J.)

"...My first purchase (from JMI) was a MOTOFOCUS ... I have nerve damage in my arms and focusing was a real chore.  Not any more!  I was so pleased, that when I was looking for an after-market set of electronic setting circles, I researched them all and purchased the NGC-MAX..."  (see continuing comments about the NGC-MAX)  (R. L.)

"...BTW, I'm a MOTOFOCUS owner and it's the best purchase I've made yet.  Great products you have there!   Thanks bunches!"  (P. L.)

"I don't know how I got along without (MOTOFOCUS)!   ...  I love your products.  There ought to be a law requiring all telescope venders to include a JMI catalogue with every scope."  (L. W. D.)

"It is nice to deal with a company that is sincerely committed to offering a top-quality product and backing it up with customer service to match.  Needless to say, whenever I need an accessory for my scope, I'll call JMI."  (J. E. G.)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q. What is the difference between a Focuser and MOTOFOCUS?
A. A focuser is the mechanical device that moves an eyepiece (or other equipment) in and out to bring an image into focus.  On the other hand, MOTOFOCUS units are designed to be attached to the shaft of a focuser knob (or the knob itself) to motorize the movement of the focuser.  It allows the focuser to be moved in or out without touching it.  Touching the focuser usually causes unwanted movement in the whole telescope.

Q. Are your MOTOFOCUS motors AC or DC powered?
A. All JMI MOTOFOCUS motors are DC powered.  The unit designed for the Meade LX200 plugs into the telescope control panel and is controlled by the LX200 hand unit.  All other MOTOFOCUS units are designed to operate with a JMI hand unit.  These hand units include variable speed control and electronic braking and are powered by a single 9-volt battery (or two 1.5-volt AA batteries in a few older hand units).

Q. How much focusing control does a MOTOFOCUS give?
A. With practice, you can move the focuser drawtube in increments much smaller than the thickness of the average business card.

Q. How is the MOTOFOCUS unit attached to the telescope?
A. All MOTOFOCUS units designed for rack-and-pinion focusers attach the same way.  One of the focuser knobs is removed and the MOTOFOCUS coupler is pushed over the exposed drive shaft.  The motor bracket is then secured to the focuser.   The units made for SCTs are friction-driven push-on motors that go on and off the focus knob in seconds for easy storage.

Q. Can I get some kind of visible readout of drawtube position?
A. Yes!  Simply order the Digital Focus Counter (DFC) upgrade at the same time you order your MOTOFOCUS or you can purchase the Personal Computer Focus Control (PCFC) system for displaying and controlling the position on a computer screen.  Since the upgrades are integrated during manufacturing, they cannot be added later.  DRO and DFC upgrades are not available for ETX and NexStar telescopes.

Q. Are there any telescopes for which you do not make a MOTOFOCUS?
A. Helical and slide tube type focusers are not suitable for MOTOFOCUS.  We also do not make a MOTOFOCUS unit for any focuser that is physically unable to support the system.

Q. Do you have MOTOFOCUS for telescopes not listed here?
A. We have MOTOFOCUS units for many older telescopes.  Even if your equipment is not listed, we may still have parts in inventory.  However, the cost will be much higher than for those shown in our online store.
